~ Heavenly Eggnog ~

This was my main piece for the Constantly Obsessed Zine. The theme was "Events." I started this in Fall 2021, and moving into the holidays I thought "Winter's Feast" would be a proficient choice of event. I wanted to feature my favorite character (surprise surprise), and coming upwardly with ideas, my mind zeroed in on this ane. The whole matter is based on the examine quote Maxwell has for the Heavenly Eggnog:

Which is pregnant, because every other Christmas-centered/Winter's Feast-centered quote has Maxwell beingness an absolute grouch about the festivities. I chose to believe that he associates the holidays with Charlie, and now he's trying to distance himself from thoughts of her, and the pain that goes with them.

However - maybe there's room for one warm and happy memory.

I'k proud of the colors here (though I went a little nuts with effects and confetti brushes). I wanted his memories to appear golden and warm, contrasting with the chill of the present moment. Fifty-fifty still, there'southward a warmth creeping into his face, his pare, even the eggnog loving cup seems to glow with a faint heat.

The composition took a long fourth dimension to figure out - I was originally going to feature merely i retention vignette, but I couldn't find a way to position the figures around the Maxwell in the center that I was happy with. I concluded up going with 2 vignettes, which I like considering it makes information technology seem more similar he's reliving an consequence in his head, equally opposed to just one image.

Maxwell trying and so damn hard to keep up his kingly image in front end of the other survivors both on and off of the throne but nevertheless granting them footling boons. Wilson'south beard, the invincibility of Willow's lighter, Wolfgang'southward actual not faked force, Abigail's reviving. do you think he places reeds in swamps that Wickerbottom is going to? do you call up he adds an extra few rabbits to the prairies next to Wigfrid's base of operations? i think he tries to concur at least one hound back whenever they go for Wes. i think he takes intendance of some of the pigs for Webber

does it hurt him? absolutely. merely he can have it. it's his fault they're hither, isn't information technology? so why should they be the ones suffering? he can't take all of it, he know he can't. information technology'southward not possible. if it were, i think he would attempt, but he's a smart man. he knows information technology'southward not worth the shot, it won't work anyway

he doesn't want them to know he'due south doing these things for them. why should he try and get their compassion, when he'due south ruined their lives, ruined everything? even if he could send everyone back dwelling house, he couldn't prepare them. he couldn't take away their trauma or their scars. he couldn't fix Charlie

so he tries to purposefully take abroad whatsoever idea of compassion or sympathy they may have had for him. he doesn't deserve it. and then upwardly the statues go, and there's that laugh and the faint gramophone as they're trying to sleep at dark. if they run into him as a monster, then that'southward all the ameliorate. they won't call back that he's targeted them specifically, they'll call up he was out for anyone, and they just got unlucky. they won't try to fix him or help him because they won't see him as annihilation that was ever not broken in the first place (they're right, he tells himself. power doesn't corrupt, information technology only reveals.) he'due south killed them over and over and over again, trapped them in this otherworldly hell. why should he even call up that he gets any skillful things?
